The Razor Billed Auk is a fast efficient design for straight-ahead speed. Intended as touring boat this design has plenty of room for gear, but should also be competitive in "touring" or "sea kayak" class races. The prototype pictured here was built without hatches but they can be incorporated as needed. Since taking these pictures I have added a rudder. I find the rudder makes maintaining a course while concentrating on applying full power easier.
Builders have been successfully competing with this boat in the New England area.
It has a fairly plumb bow and stern to maximize the overall waterline length to give it good hull speed. A fairly high prismatic coefficient maximizes this hull speed. The fairly round bottom decreases the wetted surface are for a minimum of drag while sacrificing stability. It has a good amount of "skegginess" in the stern to keep it tracking straight. This boat should be able to 21+ miles in less than 3 hours given the right power plant (that would be you).
