Guillemot "Coastal": Nick Schade spent several years experimenting with different designs looking for a kayak worth going through the effort of making a mold to produce fibreglass boats. Although he has not gone into production of fibreglass boats, this is the design he settled on. The volume is brought fairly far fore and aft to give it good speed and buoyancy in waves. This boat tracks well and has comfortable stability. It turns nicely without undo effort. Leaning is not required for manoeuvring.

He has since designed the "Guillemot" which is essentially the same boat with some changes in cross-sectional shape. The Guillemot is easier to build and there is little difference in performance. As a result he is dropping the Coastal from his catalog, though if you like the shape of this boat and are willing to take on a more challenging to build shape the plans for this boat are still available.
