• Night Heron: The standard Night Heron has a roomy foredeck combined with a low back deck. The "low deck" version of the Night Heron is a little lower. For the paddler who is serious about doing the traditional layback rolls of the Greenland Inuits, both of these decks may still be a little high. With the "Greenland Styled" deck I have made the back deck absolutely flat, and flatten out the foredeck except for the cockpit area. I also drew it up with the small, round, "ocean" style cockpit preferred by some paddlers. This deck configuration will be super easy to roll using the Greenland based lay-back techniques. Because the hull shape is exactly the same as the standard Night Heron, the "upright" performance will be exactly the same.

Comparison of the different deck configurations.

Nick Schade recommends this boat for paddlers who wish to concentrate on their rolling skill. Because of the low volume of this design it is really unsuitable for multiday tours, and in rough conditions the flat deck may not shed water as easily as the more peaked deck of the standard Night Heron. The low volume of this configuration will make techniques such as a balance brace very easy. The small cockpit will allow you to brace anywhere in the boat.
